Breast Reduction
A Surgical Solution to Relieve Discomfort; Restore Balance & Proportion;
& Experience Physical Relief.
-
Breast reduction surgery, or reduction mammoplasty, is a transformative procedure that not only enhances body symmetry but also relieves the physical discomfort caused by overly large or heavy breasts. At Meadowlark Surgical Centre & Cosmetic Clinic, our board-certified Plastic Surgeons perform breast reductions with the goal of improving posture, reducing pain, and restoring natural proportion.
This procedure is offered within our fully accredited Edmonton facility, supported by a collaborative team of surgical and cosmetic care professionals.

Am I a Candidate for Breast Reduction?
You may be a good candidate for breast reduction surgery if:
You experience back, neck, or shoulder pain caused by breast weight
You have grooves in your shoulders from bra straps
Physical activity is limited or uncomfortable due to breast size
Your breasts feel disproportionate to your frame
You are experiencing skin irritation beneath the breasts
We recommend breast reduction surgery only after the breasts have fully developed. If you plan to have children or breastfeed in the future, your surgeon will discuss how this may impact your surgical plan.
-
Breast reduction involves the removal of excess breast tissue, fat, and skin, followed by reshaping and lifting of the remaining tissue for a smaller, more elevated contour. Common incision patterns include:
Around the areola
Vertically from the areola to the breast crease
Horizontally along the natural breast fold (when needed)
The nipple and areola are repositioned to suit the new breast shape while remaining attached to the underlying tissue. Liposuction may also be used to refine contour under the arms or along the side of the chest.
Each procedure is meticulously planned with your goals and body proportions in mind—and supported by our collaborative care team for recovery and long-term maintenance.
-
While breast reduction is safe and widely performed, potential risks include:
Temporary or permanent changes in nipple or breast sensation
Difficulty breastfeeding (depending on the technique used)
Asymmetry or minor differences in nipple height or breast shape
Bleeding, infection, or anaesthetic complications (rare)
Your surgeon will discuss all risks and considerations during your consultation, ensuring you have a full understanding of the procedure and outcomes.

Recovery, Healing & Scar Care
Most patients return to light activity within 7–10 days, with swelling and bruising gradually improving over several weeks. A supportive surgical bra is typically recommended during early healing to maintain comfort and reduce swelling.
As with all breast procedures, scarring is expected. However, at Meadowlark, your healing is thoughtfully supported by a team of Cosmetic Nurses and Laser Specialists who offer:
Pre-surgical skin conditioning to prepare for optimal healing
Medical-grade silicone scar therapies to improve scar appearance
Sciton laser treatments (such as BBL, Halo, or MicroLaserPeel) to reduce pigment and smooth scar texture
Ongoing support to monitor results and adjust your post-operative care plan
Final breast shape and scar maturation continue to evolve for several months, with most patients returning to full daily activity within 3–4 weeks.
