Breast Reduction in Edmonton

Breast reduction surgery can improve the appearance of the breasts and relieve the physical symptoms related to large or heavy breasts. The Meadowlark Surgical Centre & Cosmetic Clinic offers breast reduction procedures at our Edmonton facility.

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR BREAST REDUCTION?

Women who find their breasts very large and heavy, to the point that they create discomfort to their shoulders, back and neck, are candidates for breast reduction. We recommend this breast surgery be undertaken only after the breasts are fully developed.

HOW DOES THE SURGICAL PROCEDURE WORK?

There are variations to the incisions used for breast reduction. The traditional method uses three incisions: one around the areola, the second vertically from the bottom edge of the areola to the crease under the breast, and the third along the curve of the breast crease. After excess skin and breast are removed, the nipple and areola are moved to a higher position. Skin that was located above the nipple prior to the breast surgery is pulled down, giving a new shape to the breast.

Liposuction can also be employed to improve the contour under the arm.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF BREAST REDUCTION?

Important note: Although some women decide to undergo breast reduction before having children, it is important that you discuss your plans to breastfeed with your plastic surgeon, as it may not be possible following a breast reduction.

Although the nipples and areolas remain attached to the breast tissue during a breast reduction, numbness can occur. Other possible complications include bleeding, infection and reactions to anaesthesia. The breasts may not be exactly identical and nipple height may vary.

Several days after breast surgery, you will be able to move about comfortably. You may be instructed to wear a support bra for a few weeks until the swelling and discoloration of your breasts diminishes.
Incisions will be red at first and normally stay this way for several months following breast reduction, but most patients return to work within a month.
