Get a Tummy Tuck in Edmonton

Abdominoplasty or a “tummy tuck” is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures. Its goal is to remove excess skin and fat from the middle or lower part of the abdomen. The Meadowlark Surgical Centre & Cosmetic Clinic offers tummy tucks at our Edmonton clinic.

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR ABDOMINOPLASTY?

Tummy tucks are most commonly performed on women and men after having gained excessive midline weight during middle age, and on women following childbirth. Major weight loss is also a very common indication for this plastic surgery procedure. If you are a man or a woman who has lost weight and needs to have excess loose skin removed, an abdominoplasty will help tighten your abdominal area and make the end results of your weight loss outstanding.

HOW DOES THE SURGICAL PROCEDURE WORK?

Abdominoplasty tightens the muscle layer, reshaping and “rejuvenating” the underlying structure of the abdomen. It then removes fat, distended skin, scarring and stretch marks. This creates a major change in the abdominal wall, significantly improving the patient’s shape and figure.

Our surgeons specialize in two different tummy tuck procedures. For minimal looseness and imperfections in the abdominal area, a mini tummy tuck may be all that is required. This plastic surgery procedure involves making a low, short transverse incision in the underwear line, from which point the muscle can be tightened, and excess skin and fat can be removed.

A full tummy tuck requires a similar incision, but also requires the skin to be elevated all the way up to the ribs. The results of a full tummy tuck are much more substantial.

Many patients also choose to undergo liposuction in conjunction with their tummy tuck.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF ABDOMINOPLASTY?

Loose skin cannot be removed without leaving scars, and tummy tucks often require long incisions that result in long scars, which your plastic surgeon will make every effort to conceal. Although these scars will fade over time, they are permanent and their final width, height, and color cannot be predicted.

The most common complications that result from tummy tuck surgery are hematomas (accumulation of blood under the skin), seromas (fluid accumulation under the skin) and numbness of the skin. Most of the feeling usually comes back. Hematomas and seromas may require intervention to drain the blood or serum that has accumulated.

Most patients will be able to resume their normal activities within two weeks of undergoing abdominoplasty surgery, and many return to work the third week. It can take 6-12 months to see the final results of a tummy tuck.
