Eyelid Surgery in Edmonton

The eyes are the most expressive elements of the face. Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, aims to correct heavy, wrinkled or baggy eyelids to help restore the expressiveness of your eyes. The Meadowlark Surgical Centre & Cosmetic Clinic offers eyelid surgery at our Edmonton facility.

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR BLEPHAROPLASTY?

Most candidates for eyelid surgery have drooping upper lids and/or puffy bags below their eyes. Some wish to correct problems that are a result of aging, while others have inherited traits that cause them to seek treatment at a younger age.

HOW DOES THE SURGICAL PROCEDURE WORK?

Eyelid surgery involves the removal of fat, muscle or skin from the upper or lower eyelids. During surgery, incisions are made in the creases of the upper lids or just below the lashes in the lower lids. Skin is separated from fatty tissue and muscle, excess fat is removed, and sagging skin and muscle is trimmed. The incisions are then closed with very fine sutures.

The results of blepharoplasty can last for many years – alleviating the “tired eye” look and leaving you with a natural, lively and youthful appearance.

Eyelid surgery is often performed with a facelift.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF BLEPHAROPLASTY?

For the most part, blepharoplasty patients heal quite rapidly. Mild swelling can persist from a week to several weeks, and in most people, bruising fades in seven to ten days. Incision lines will fade over several months until they become barely visible.

Following eyelid surgery, you may experience dryness or irritation in the eye. There is also a chance of a temporary reduction in eyelid sensation or impaired eyelid function, which may have to be treated with additional surgery.

You may also find your eyes become temporarily sensitive to light and experience excess tearing or dryness. Consider wearing dark sunglasses for a couple of weeks to protect your eyes from the elements.
